Arrest and Detention of Dr Atiya Abdullah Atiya un El Gadareif East Sudan

Justice Africa Sudan and the African Unity & Peace Organisation strongly condemn the arbitrary arrest and detention of Dr. Atiya Abdullah Atiya, a public health specialist and union leader, in El Gedaref, Eastern Sudan since mid August 2026. At the time of his arrest, Dr. Atiya was providing vital treatment for leishmaniasis patients, making his detention a direct violation of humanitarian principles and international law. The appeal demands his immediate and unconditional release, access for his family and lawyer, disclosure of his place of detention, and protection from ill treatment. It further calls for an independent investigation and accountability for those responsible, as well as an end to harassment of health and humanitarian workers. The organisations urge the United Nations, ICRC, regional partners, and civil society worldwide to intervene, exert pressure for his release, and stand in solidarity with Sudanese doctors and health workers. They reaffirm their commitment to continue advocating until Dr. Atiya is freed and the rights of medical personnel are respected. …read more
