Justice Africa Human Rights Violations Report 2023
Briefing Summary: Human Rights Documentation and Advocacy Report Since the outbreak of the war in Sudan on 15 April 2023, Justice Africa Sudan (JAS) has been at the forefront of documenting and exposing the devastating human rights violations committed by both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Through our extensive network of human rights defenders, activists, and emergency committees operating across Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan, and the White Nile, we have verified hundreds of incidents that reveal a consistent pattern of grave abuses. These include: • Extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances • Kidnappings and torture • Rape and conflict related sexual violence • Looting, forced displacement, and forced marriage • Indiscriminate aerial bombardment and shelling of civilian areas • Allegations of chemical weapons use against civilians The impact on Sudanese civilians has been catastrophic. Families have been torn apart, entire communities displaced, and livelihoods destroyed. Women and children have borne the brunt of the violence, facing sexual slavery, hunger, and denial of access to humanitarian aid. Both warring parties have violated their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions and the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect Civilians. The collapse of state institutions and the absence of accountability have created a climate of total impunity, leaving civilians unprotected and abandoned. Despite intimidation, threats, and the killing of activists, JAS’s network continues to document violations, preserve evidence, and advocate for survivors. Our findings underscore the urgent need for: • Enhanced protection of civilians • Unhindered humanitarian access • International accountability mechanisms This report is both a record of the suffering endured by Sudan’s people and a call to action for the international community to uphold its responsibilities and stand with those most affected by the war. …read more
