Subject: Human Rights Alert: Escalating Drone Attacks on Civilians in West Kordofan and Abye
i Dear Colleagues, Please find attached a Human Rights Alert issued by Justice Africa Sudan (JAS) regarding the recent escalation of drone attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in Al-Dabbab, Al-Mujlad, and the Al-Na'am (Ostrich) Market area of Abyei and West Kordofan State. The alert documents reports of serious civilian casualties, destruction of civilian property, and attacks on marketplaces, transport vehicles, fuel facilities, and residential areas. It also includes the names of civilians reported killed in the attack on Al-Na'am Market and raises concerns regarding compliance with international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians in conflict-affected areas. Justice Africa Sudan calls upon the United Nations, African Union, IGAD, UNISFA, international human rights mechanisms, humanitarian agencies, and diplomatic partners to: • Urgently investigate the reported attacks; • Ensure accountability for violations of international humanitarian law; • Strengthen civilian protection measures in Abyei and West Kordofan; • Facilitate unrestricted humanitarian access to affected communities; and • Support independent monitoring and documentation efforts. The continued use of drone warfare in populated civilian areas by parties to the conflict is resulting in an alarming increase in civilian casualties and damage to critical civilian infrastructure. Immediate international attention and action are required to prevent further loss of life and ensure compliance with international legal obligations. We would be grateful if you could circulate this alert through your respective networks and take any appropriate action within your mandates. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
